ALPHA is the first studio album by Shenseea, set to be released on March 11, 2022 under Rich Immigrants/Interscope Records. The influences of pop, reggae, and hip-hop all over the record sum up the artist’s current artistic path. Shenseea talked about the album’s creative process and goals during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe:

This album is me experimenting. So yes, there’s a vibe like this that you’ve never heard, but there are also other songs that you’ve never heard a vibe like that, either. So, I feel like […] I’m going to put it out there, and then I’m going to see people’s reaction. If they react to everything, then trust me, they beat.

She revealed in an interview with MTV News the reason behind her album name:

I wanted to call it ALPHA because it resonates with my personality, it’s who I am. I’m a leader when it comes on to my ShenYengz and whatever I want to achieve in life, I lead first, I set the trends. It doesn’t matter if the world is against me, I’m gonna do what I wanna do because I am the ALPHA, I am strong, being everything that I have endured till this day in my life. I know who I am, I know what I want, I know the strength that it took for me to get here and I just feel like it was the perfect name.

The artist first announced the album with several posts (with the majority of them hinting at lyrics of upcoming songs) on her Instagram profile throughout 2021. The album’s first two singles, “Lick” and “R U That,” confirmed Shenseea’s change of pace in her sound.

However, “Lick” also set off a lot of controversies in the dancehall scene, as many dancehall artists and fans from the scene didn’t condone the extremely explicit content of the track. Meanwhile, “R U That” marked the artist’s first song to feature fully English lyrics, in contrast with her frequent use of patois.
